Portland at its peak

I’m always trying to capture the essence of Portland in photos: the sweetness of the people, the relaxed fusion of scruff and elegance, the rich and cozy interiors, the local starving musicians performing in speakeasy-like restaurants, the neighborhoods overrun with bicycles and the café scene. These photos are from the Mississippi neighborhood which is already showing signs of its demise: large modern housing units going up and the appearance of one-too-many foofy home furnishing stores. Trying to keep a neighborhood from being taken over by corporate chains but open to commerce that attracts people, but not too many is a delicate balancing act. Portland has done well with it. But it can’t last. Developers smell the opportunity and the appearance of a crane erecting condos is a sign that the end is near.

Here’s my attempt to capture it before it’s gone.
