Watching over the boy

Harry has gone to work
His sister has gone for a walk
I sit beside Patrick enjoying a rare, quiet moment in the hospital
I watch over his bed monitoring his sounds, looking at his skin
He closes his eyes to rest for a moment amid a tangle of tubes
His small hands begin twitching and clenching
Looking at his fragile body, I see what I’ve always seen
and what I fell in love with 20 years ago:
the childlike vulnerability of a boy
wrestling with his demons
